Accessorizing An Outfit

Accessories have the ability to change an outfit from one look to another without having to go out to buy another outfit. Not only can they give a variety of looks to a single outfit, they can also update or revive classic clothing styles and make an inexpensive garment look expensive. Other benefits of accessorizing include:

 * Defining your own personal style
 * Relating different items of your outfit to each other
 * Pulling attention away from the spots that you don’t want noticed
 * Drawing attention to your better features.

When choosing accessories, make sure that you choose the ones that will enhance your outfit by looking at the outfit’s texture, feel and colors. To stretch your accessory and wardrobe dollar, find accessories that will successfully benefit a variety of wardrobes. Avoid getting accessories that overpower your outfits. Large, flashy, or brightly colored items can take the focus away from you and should also be avoided.

For an updated look, make sure to stay current on your accessories. Those beloved leg warmers that you wore as a teen may not be a good accessories for your jeans today. Make sure that you look at magazines, other people and even newspaper circulars for clothing to get an idea on the latest styles. However, it is advised that you do not wear all these trends at once.

Even though one signature piece that accessorize your outfit is encouraged, make sure that you do not choose the same, expected pieces each time. for example, if your signature accessories involves a silk scarf, you can use it as a head scarf, tie it around your handbag or tie it loosely around your neck.

The right pair of shoes can make a big difference in the total look of your outfit. When choosing the shoes for your outfit, consider where the shoes will be worn, how long the shoes will be on and if the shoes give your outfit a whole new look, or will they be consistent with the look of the clothes.

Can White Be Worn After Labor Day?

Labor Day has passed and you may be thinking to yourself about your wardrobe and wondering if you can wear your favorite  white clothing item or accessory. In the past, Labor Day meant that we switched our wardrobe to match the upcoming seasons.  The light and airy clothes of spring and summer usually gave way to the dark and cozier fashions of the fall and winter. While this concept usually sets our eyes ahead and prepares us for the colder temperatures, it also has us in a dilemma.  As we look forward to wearing that cozy sweater, we also want to wear that favorite white skirt to go with it. Perhaps the weather in your area has not become cool enough for the thicker and darker clothes yet and you may be wondering if you can wear those lighter clothes until the weather actually does get cooler.

What Is The Orgin Of This Fashion Tradition?

There are several factors that play into this tradition. One can say that temparature does play a major factor; white and brighter colors reflect heat while dark colors absorb heat. Other factors are mostly cultural and can stem from the 19th century up until the 1950s when more people were entering the middle classes. To be able to fit into their new social class, people were given specific codified rules to follow in their seasonal dress. In the American South, where the fashions can be a little more formal than elsewhere, it was once believed that white shoes before Easter or after Labor Day was a sign of bad manners. Originally, the rule  mainly applied to white pumps or dress shoes. Winter white clothing (e.g., cream-colored wool) is acceptable between Labor Day and Memorial Day as well as white boots, shoes worn by a bride getting married in winter, and white sneakers.

Is It Okay To Wear White After Labor Day?

Traditionally, white blouses and shirts were considered year around wear while other white clothing, such as dresses, pants, skirts, shoes, jackets and other outerwear were exclusively made for spring and summer seasons. However, over the last several years, the rules of fashion have become more relaxed as we see designers make their fall and winter lines of clothing in white. The key to this new transition is the fabric itself as it changes from light and cooler in the spring and summer to heavier and warmer in the winter. With this in mind, the consumer will have the cheery brightness of the color as well as the cozy warmth of the fabric that is needed in cooler weather. Accessories, when it comes to your wardrobe, can also be a good indicator to the time of year. While accessories made of straw are very appropriate and good choices for the spring and summer months, you might want to consider leather, leather-like or metal materials that might coordinate with your shoes and clothes when transitioning to the fall and winter season.

Other Points To Consider

As mentioned earlier, you might find yourself well after Labor Day with temperatures still too warm for your favorite sweaters. Lighter weight fabrics with darker colors will help with the seasonal transitions from warmer to cooler weather. While the weather cools off, you can start switching to the heavier fabrics. Even though white sandals are not appropriate into the fall and winter seasons, mules, sling backs and open toed shoes in darker colors can help you make the transition into fall. As the weather gets colder and wetter, you might find that your open toed shoes might not be that comfortable. With this in mind you can make the transition from your open toed shoes or sling backs to classic shoe styles and boots. White sneakers are accepted all year around.

Hats, scarves, jewelry or gloves can add to your outfits style or create visual effects of the fabric in which the outfit is made.
